It’s nice to know you can plan your vacation and have all of this entertainment in one location.
But with so much to do in Tamarindo, you’ll want to make sure you don’t miss out on any fun activities during your trip.
Best Tour in Costa Rica
If you only do one tour while you are in Costa Rica make it an Adventure Combo tour. Zip lining, Horseback riding, and river rafting.
While you are enjoying your vacation in Tamarindo and filling your days with all the best tours, also be sure to take time to relax and enjoy all the beautiful beaches near tamarindo.
Costa Rica is all about the pura vida lifestyle. Embrace it, enjoy it and learn to love it.
Here are the top 10 things to do in Tamarindo
1. Take A Surf Lesson
Tamarindo is world famous for their friendly and easy to learn on waves. If you have ever thought about surfing before, Tamarindo is the place to do it.
Tamarindo’s warm waters and friendly surf instructors will have you riding the waves in no time no matter your age or ability. While working in Tamarindo, I saw kids as young as 2, and adults as old as 80 learning to surf.
2. Sunset Cruise
One of my favorite things to do in Tamarindo is enjoying a sunset tour. Nothing beats going out on the open water, having a couple of drinks, and enjoying the beautiful scenery, especially in Costa Rica. The bright blue waters with lush green mountains in the background are stunning. You can’t beat it!
You can join a boat tour and spend half your day on the water where visiting private beaches and going snorkeling.
If go at the right time of year you might even see some whales.
Enjoy a freshly cooked lunch on board and all you can drink. It can get a little out of hand with the open bar, but it is always a good time.
3. Zip-Lining
If you are an adrenaline junkie like me then you have to try zip-lining while you are in Costa Rica. There is nothing more exhilarating than soaring through the air above the tree line and seeing the blue ocean.
Zip-lining can be fun for the whole family. If you are feeling super adventurous, I highly recommend doing a combo tour that includes horseback riding or an ATV tour.
4. River Boat Or Kayak Tour
Escape the hustle and bustle of Tamarindo and enjoy a relaxing 2-hour tour up the estuary by moat boat or Kayak. Enjoy peaceful bird watching, see some monkeys, and view crocodiles from the safety of your boat.
I opted to take the kayak tour over the boat after reading the benefits of kayaking.
Learn all about the flora and fauna and the local wildlife that Costa Rica has to offer. Great for those interested in a peaceful but educational tour. Also fun for the kids.
It’s easy to get caught up in the surf vibe of Tamarindo and forget about the wildlife Costa Rica has to offer.
5. Karaoke At Sharkys
Tamarindo is known for its nightlife and my favorite night of the week is Karaoke Night at Sharkys. Come sing your heart out or just watch everyone else while they take over the mic.
Ladies drink for free from 10 pm until 1 am, which is common in Tamarindo, and anyone who sings gets a free shot. If you have not been to a karaoke night before sharky’s will not disappoint you. It’s not as funny as these karaoke videos, but it will keep you entertained.
It is the one-night life activity that you will want to add to your things to do in Tamarindo list.
6. Day Trip To Playa Avellanas Or Lola’s
Take a day trip to Playa Avellanas or Lola’s, be aware that they are closed on Monday’s. Come soak up the sun and relax at this beautiful beach.
Made famous for their pet pig who was named Lola. Lola is long gone, but they have a new pig named Lolita that is just as big.
It is the perfect place to camp up for the day and enjoy some good food. It’s also a great spot to hang out and watch the surfers or even join them yourself.
7. Turtle Nesting
Turtle nesting is a very popular thing to do while you are in Costa Rica and I highly recommend it, but you have to come at the right time. From October – March the turtles come to shore to lay their eggs.
You are likely to see the green turtles or if you are lucky enough, maybe even the leatherback turtle.
Watch as the turtles slowly come to shore at night, dig a giant hole and shoot ping-pong ball-looking eggs into the sand.
Beaches in Costa Rica are highly protected, including turtles and their eggs, so any turtle nest is marked and guarded so poachers can’t get to them.
This is a great tour for turtle lovers or kids. But be aware that the tours go out at night and is dependent on the tides.
8. Sunset Happy Hour
Tamarindo has some of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen. Nothing like catching the sunset with happy hour and friends after spending all day surfing or adventuring.
There are tons of happy hour spots on the beach with live music or a Dj. All of them offer cheap beers or 2×1 cocktails. My favorite spot to watch the sun go down and hopefully see the green flash has to be Chiringuitos.
Come with friends, or come solo. It is a great place to meet up and meet new people.
9. Deep Sea Fishing
I’m not huge into deep-sea fishing, but from all the places I have been, I can say that Costa Rica has some of the best deep-sea fishing around. You very seldom will have a day that you go out and come back empty-handed.
Even if you don’t catch any fish, you will most likely see wildlife. Costa Rica is known for protecting their wildlife, not only on land, but also at sea. You are sure to see dolphins, sea turtles, and if you are lucky enough, whales.
10. Horseback Riding
Tamarindo is located in Guanacaste, which happens to be known as the cowboy section of the country.
Come get a true sense of the Costa Rican lifestyle and take a horseback riding tour through the countryside.
A great tour for the kids or anyone who loves horses.

- Diria – Biggest Hotel in Tamarindo. Right on the Ocean in the Center of Town, you can’t go wrong with the location
- Capitan Suizo – Quiet Hotel on the outside of town. Perfect if you are looking for a more peaceful experience
- Selina – Best Budget Option on the beach
Import Items to Pack for Tamarindo
Before heading out to Tamarindo, there are a few things you are going to want to not forget to pack.
- Bug Bands – These are a great alternative to Bug Spray. They work great and are easy to throw in your carry on
- Sun Screen Face Stick – Sunscreen is EXPENSIVE in Costa Rica and not always the best. If you are checking luggage bring your own, if not these sunscreen sticks are great for putting in your carry-on luggage.
- Imodium– Traveling can do some unwanted things to your Stomach, I always travel with Imodium and take one on the first day I arrive in a new country to prevent me from getting sick

You can be as active as you want or just sit back and enjoy the Pura Vida lifestyle. No matter what you decide to do or not do on your vacation, you are bound to have a good time.
