Top 10 Things To Do In Tamarindo
Tamarindo, Costa Rica the one-stop place in Costa Rica where you can do it all. Costa Rica is known for its adventure tours, wildlife tours, and surf camps, just to name a few.
So it’s nice to know you can plan your vacation, do everything and not have to move around.
But with so much to do in Tamarindo, you will want to make sure you don’t miss out on any fun activities during your trip.
I have made a list of the top 10 things to do while you are there.
1. Take a Surf Lesson
Tamarindo is world famous for their friendly and easy to learn on waves. If you have ever thought about surfing before, Tamarindo is the place to do it.
Tamarindo’s warm waters and the friendly surf instructors will have anybody a surf pro in no time. It doesn’t matter your age or your ability. While working in Tamarindo, I saw people as young as 2 and as old as 80 learn. If you are going to book a surf lesson be sure to do it with Iguana Surf Tamarindo’s oldest surf shop.
One of my favorite things to do while I am on vacation is enjoy a sunset tour. Nothing beats going out on the open water, having a couple of drinks and enjoying the beautiful scenery the location has to offer, especially Costa Rica. The bright blue waters, lush green mountains in the background. You can’t beat it!
Come out, and spend half your day on the water. Go to a private bay and do some exclusive snorkeling.
If you are lucky and go at the right time of year you might even see some Whales.
Enjoy a freshly cooked lunch on aboard and all you can drink. It can get a little out of hand with the open bar, so if you are planning a family day on the boat, I suggest the Blue Dolphin as it tends to be a little tamer.
If you don’t have the little ones with the Marlin del Rey has always been a memorable time.
If you are an adrenaline junkie like me then you have to try zip-lining while you in Costa Rica. There is no more exhilarating feeling than soaring through the air above the tree-lines and seeing the blue ocean.
Pura Aventura has 11 cables that will have you soaring through the forest and feeling like a kid again. Fun for the whole family.
If you are feeling super adventurous I highly recommend doing a combo tour and either combining the horseback riding or ATV tour
4. River Boat or Kayak Tour
Escape the hustle and bustle of Tamarindo. Enjoy a peaceful relaxing 2-hour tour up the estuary either by moat boat or Kayak. Enjoy some peaceful bird watching, see some monkeys and view the crocodiles from the safety of your boat.
Learn all about the flora and fauna and the local wildlife that Costa Rica has to offer. Great for those looking for a peaceful, but educational tour. Also, fun for the kids.
It’s easy to get caught up in the surf vibe of Tamarindo and forget about the wildlife Costa Rica has to offer.
5.Karaoke at Sharkys
Tamarindo is known for its nightlife. But my favorite night of the week by far is Karaoke Night at Sharkys. Come sing your heart out or just watch everyone else while they take over the mic.
Ladies drink for free from 10 pm until 1 am (which is common in Tamarindo) and if anyone who sings gets a free shot.
6.Day Trip to Playa Avellanas or Lola’s
Take a day trip to Playa Avellanas or Lola’s (Beware they are closed on Monday’s). Come soak up the sun and relax at this beautiful beach.
Made famous for their pet pig, who was originally named Lola. Lola is long gone, but they have a new pig named Lolita that is just as Big.
It is the perfect place to camp up for the day, enjoy some good food. Great spot to hang out and watch the surfers or even join them yourself.
Turtle nesting is a highly seasonal thing to do while you are in Costa Rica, but if you come during the right time I highly recommend it. From October – March the turtles come to shore to lay their eggs.
You are likely to see the green turtles or if you are lucky enough maybe even the leatherback turtle.
Watch as the turtles slowly come to shore at night, dig a giant hole and shoot ping-pong looking eggs into the sand.
Beaches in Costa Rica are highly protected, including turtles and their eggs, so any turtle nest is marked and guarded so poachers can’t get to them.
Great tour for Turtle Lovers or kids. But beware the tour goes out at night and the time depends on the tides.
As that is when the turtles are more likely to come to shore and lay their eggs.
8.Sunset Happy Hour
Tamarindo has some of the best sunsets I’ve seen. Nothing like catching the sunset with happy hour and friends after spending all day surfing or on tours.
There are tons of happy hour spots in Tamarindo on the beach with live music or a Dj. All of them offering cheap beers or 2×1 cocktails, but my favorite spot to watch the sun go down and hopefully see the green flash has to be Chiringuitos.
Come with friends, or come solo. It is a great place to meet up and meet new people.
9.Deep Sea Fishing
I’m not huge into deep sea fishing, but from all the places I have been, I can say that Costa Rica has some of the best deep sea fishing around. You very seldom will have a day that you go out and come back empty handed.
Even if you don’t catch any fish, you will most likely see wildlife. Costa Rica is known for protecting their wildlife, not only on land, but they also do their part at sea. You are sure to see dolphins, sea turtles and if you are lucky enough maybe even whales.
Tamarindo is located in Guanacaste, which happens to be known as the cowboy section of the country.
Come get a true sense of the Costa Rican lifestyle and take a horseback riding tour, through the countryside.
Great tour for the kids or anyone who loves horses.
